![]() I had never considered this before, but I looked up the wording of the “Magnificat” to check it out. This pastor said that a Rabbi had once told him that Christians completely missed the beauty of our own Christmas story since most Christians have no clue that much of the poetry of Luke 1 is quoted from the Old Testament. But there are several points in chapter 1 that bear notice:ġ) My parents’ church had the unique privilege for a time of having a Christian pastor who graduated from a Hebrew seminary. (Luke 1:1-4).īecause there is so much detail in Luke’s account, we will pass over most of Luke chapter 1. As mentioned last time in our study of Matthew, the Christmas account in the book of Luke generally reflects the thoughts and impressions of Mary which would be expected since Luke likely asked Mary herself for the details. It details the reason for the journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem, the Nativity itself, and the response of the shepherds and others to the tidings that the King had been born. Luke’s account includes and intertwines the miraculous birth of John the Baptist with that of Jesus’ miraculous birth. ![]() Matthew chapter 2 centers upon the visit of the wise men, the demonic response of King Herod, and the trip to and from Egypt to protect Jesus from Herod’s wrath. The balance of the chapter is the description of Joseph’s approach to finding out Mary was pregnant. Most of Matthew chapter 1 is the genealogy from Abraham down to Jesus.
